A new production of Verdi’s great Shakespearean opera, conducted by David Robertson and backed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, premières at the festival this year.

Bleak and dramatic, Verdi prized this work above all his others and described the source material as "one of the greatest creations of man." His libretto is faithful to the famous text, in which the murderous ambitions of a Scottish general have terrible consequences.

David Robertson has been principal guest conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra since 2005, and is now entering his fifth season as Music Director of the 130-year-old Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. Playing the two leads are the Georgian baritone Lado Ataneli, who last sang the role in the Metropolitan Opera in New York under James Levine, and American soprano Susan Neves.
