There's always something sweet and engaging about geeks indulging their passions. When a Trekkie (or Trekker, as you will discover) wears pointy ears and sticks glitter to a TV remote to make a phaser, there's a part of us that melts inside. Obviously there are exceptions to this. The scary, hunched creatures who have never and will never kiss a girl unless she speaks Klingon leap chillingly to mind.

But the geeks that melt our hearts are the cheery ones who recognise their weird ways and express their passion openly and without shame. And that's the kind of geek that Richard Sandling is. Except Star Trek isn't his passion. His passion is VHS.

Yes, that's right. Obscure as it might seem, this man has a fierce and brazen passion for the chunky black video-tape. And it's the honesty of this passion which turns a solid stand up act into a work of genius. Sandling's love for the format is like a warm duvet of nostalgic fun. Like any true obsessive, his goal is to evangelize what he believes, and incredible as it may seem, he is largely successful. His infectious enthusiasm melted even the stoniest of hearts, and he left the stage to thunderous applause.

This show isn't just for the boys. Passion is a universal language, and it's this that Sendling's show is about. His is a comedy that's not cruel but nonetheless courageous. And however bad your day was you'll leave bathed in a warm, smiling glow that will last all night.
