In what is apparently Scotland's most haunted pub, Stuart Laws heads up this hour to varying degrees of success.

First up, David Hannant sucks the atmosphere from the room with what is ostensibly an awkward, jokeless set offering more apologies than gags. His lack of energy intensifies holes in the material and a distinct lack of presence.

Attempting to win back a silent audience is the smiley and charming Anna Freyburg with witty observations on her family, singledom and flat infestations. She shows flashes of potential, but when a joke falls flat you feel her morale sink. Despite some good quips, her delivery is less than subtle, playing it predictably girlish and naive. Often the jokes are somewhat predictable and, like Hannant, she tends to highlight instead of mask her misfires.

This is completely at odds with the boundless energy of compere and headliner Stuart Laws. His set revolves around audience banter, which is definitely his forte, as he leaps about the stage untangling mics and commenting on the body language of various couples around the room. Within minutes he has recaptured the audience and the laughs come thick and fast. Laws is definitely one to watch and it's worth checking this out for him alone.
