Liz Guterbock doesn’t quite fit anywhere: at 41, she’s neither old nor young; as an American with British citizenship, she’s not quite from anywhere; and as a bisexual, she’s neither gay nor straight. Geriatric Millennial sees her explore these parts of her identity and consequently her place in the world, across a solidly funny hour of charming stand-up.

Guterbock’s style is immediately gentle and warm, and her disposition sunny – as she’s quick to note herself, she is Californian after all. But while she uses this as a launchpad to explore cultural differences and poke fun at British people and customs – complete with an impressive English accent – the material is original and doesn’t rely on cliches. And she turns her comedic eye inwards too, with gags about Californians on reality TV and impressions of her mother and friends raising some of the hour’s biggest laughs.

Geriatric Millennial is Guterbock’s solo debut but follows previous experiences as a 2019 Funny Women finalist and a member of improv group Free Association, and this experience is clear in her self-assured performance and sharp writing. With reliable gags weaving pleasingly towards a satisfying conclusion, this is a skilful first hour from an already accomplished comic.
